	SELF-CATERING HOLIDAY ACCOMMODATIONS These are classified in three categories according to comfort : The "gîte-chambre d'hôte" (bed and breakfast) These are rooms you rent at the proprietor's in an agreeable environment. They offer sleeping facilities and breakfast. Usually situated in the country, you can find restaurants near by. They must be equiped as follows : minimum surface : 18 m2 ; floor and walls in perfect condition ; a fully equiped washbasin (hot and cold water, mirror, shelf, towel rail) in every room ; full bedding and household linen in perfect condition ; a fully equiped wardrobe or wall cupboard (coat-hangers, shelves, etc...), table, chairs, armchair ... Some places provide meals : You can have dinner or supper at the proprietor's and discover the local gastronomy (traditional meals prepared with regional products). The "gîte d'étape", the "gîte de groupe" The "gîte d'étape" is a self-catering holiday accommodation which specializes in the reception of hikers (backpackers, horseriders, mountainbikers). The "gîte de groupe" specializes in the reception of groups youngsters or adults. The "gîte camping-caravaning à la ferme" is a field in a green belt close by a farm with accommodation for campers who are passing through or intend to stay. SEASONAL RENTING Where do you have to apply ? Tourist Offices : They put you for free into contact with the proprietors, but they offer no garantee whatsoever as to the quality of the lodgings. Estate agents : They ask a fee which may vary considerably (no fixed rates). Directly with the proprietor (adverts). Travel agents : They have a stock of catalogues with offers for rent in France and abroad. Some tourist associations have a system of quality labels. There are five categories of classification according to comfort, service and equipment : one, two, three, four stars and "Grand confort".
